Do you have to play the Dragonball Budokai games in order to understand them?

I never played any of the budokai games, and recently just got re-interested in the dragonball franchise. Do I have to play the first Budokai game to understand the second one and so on? Are the story lines connected? Will I miss out on anything if I just skip all of them and play Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit for PS3?
